Unemployment Rate by Area Calculator

09-04-2024 Improving Skills

The UK unemployment rate at present is around 3.8% as of February, 2024 (ONS, 2024). The number of people unemployed, or out of work and looking for work decreased from the previous quarter, returning to the same low as the year prior (2022). The rate of employment sits below the estimates from 2022 as well, at approximately 75%.

The locale of unemployment is varied throughout the UK with the East Midlands having the highest unemployment rate at 5.1%, followed closely by the North East and North West at 4.3% respectively.

Part of the cause of the UK unemployment rate and those out of work looking for a job is because of the skills gap. Which, consequently, has been caused by a number of different factors including Brexit, the Coronavirus Pandemic, rapid digitalisation, inequality and the education system. The skills gap is prevalent in a number of different sectors and industries:

  • Manufacturing
  • Software
  • Business and Finance
  • Engineering
  • Digital

We face the risk of encountering not just a skills gap but also a delivery gap if the labour market continues to move in the direction it currently is.
